J.S. Bach
Brandenburg Concerto no. 5
Thursday 19 November 2020
19:00 – 20:00
21:15 – 22:15 – optional
Het Concertgebouw, Grote Zaal
This concert is canceled due to Coronavirus measures.
- Noriko Amano (Artistic director, Harpsichord)
- Sayuri Yamagata (Baroque Violin)
The programme includes Bach – Brandenburg Concerto no. 5, François Couperin – L’Impériale from Les Nations and Rameau – Pièces de Clavecin en Concert. These are all fabulous pieces, each in its own style. Bach made a transcription of the Sonata from L’Impériale by Couperin. Bach knew the piece as the German violinist Pisendel who was world famous at the time had brought back a copy from Paris.
In 1685 – the birth year of Bach – King Louis XIV renounced the Edict of Nantes, which had granted the Protestants of France (Huguenots) for 87 years the right to practice their religion. Consequently, many Huguenots fled to protestant countries, such as Brandenburg-Prussia. Among them musicians, in particular excellent French wind instrument players. Their instruments had a pitch of 392 Hz, which was used at the French court. It could therefore very well be that Bach’s chamber music orchestra (occasionally) played at this pitch. In any case, in this concert we will use this pitch that is a full tone lower than modern pitch.
